Cleaning on demand: clean only what was used
In many buildings, every room is cleaned on a fixed schedule – whether it was used or not. Wireless motion detectors, desk sensors and people counters show which rooms and workstations were actually occupied and how many people entered an area. Your cleaning schedule follows from that. Retrofitted without cables and without cameras.
Which sensor reports what
The principleFor cleaning, one simple piece of information per room is usually enough: has it been used since the last cleaning, and how heavily? Three types of sensors provide it, and they can be combined.
Ceiling motion detectors show whether a room was occupied. Desk sensors detect the use of individual workstations. People counters at the door or on the ceiling provide the number of people – important for washrooms, kitchenettes and meeting rooms that should be cleaned by frequency rather than by calendar.
Ceiling motion detector powered by its solar cell. Detection range 3 m radius at 2.5 m mounting height.
Motion and brightness, 27 mm in diameter, coin cell. Reports immediately and then every 4 minutes while motion is detected.
Vibration and motion below the desk edge. Reports every 4 minutes while occupied.
Counts people without image recognition: at the door when entering and leaving, or from the ceiling in an area up to 7.0 × 3.0 m.
From the sensor to the cleaning schedule
Data pathThe sensors transmit via EnOcean radio to the EnoDisc® receivers, which are powered over the network via PoE. The VL-700 BASE 2 gateway collects up to 500 sensors and passes on occupancy per room and the counts: as JSON to an MQTT broker, via Modbus TCP or KNX.
Your cleaning or CAFM system turns this into the schedule, for example: skip rooms not used since the last cleaning, add washrooms above a certain number of visitors. In the gateway’s ECS Dashboard you also see occupancy on the floor plan, without a server and without a cloud.
What this means for your planning
5 points- Decide per room type which information is enough: occupied or not (motion detector), number of people (people counter) or use per workstation (desk sensor).
- Ceiling motion detectors: one per approx. 28 m² (3 m radius at 2.5 m mounting height); larger rooms get several.
- People counters above every door through which people are to be counted; in open areas, plan the Presence Count on the ceiling (powered via PoE, USB or 12 to 60 V DC).
- Radio receivers: one EnoDisc® per approx. 450 m², one gateway per floor.
- Define the data path to the cleaning or CAFM system (MQTT, Modbus TCP or KNX) and store the rule there for when a room is cleaned.
Frequently asked questions
4 questionsHow does the cleaning service know which rooms are due?
The gateway delivers the occupancy messages per room with a time stamp and, for counters, the number of people. Your cleaning or CAFM system derives the schedule from this – you define the rule there.
Are people recorded or filmed?
No. The sensors capture no images and no personal characteristics; they only report motion, occupancy or a count. In Germany, the works council usually has to be involved when such a system is introduced in a company.
Do the sensors have to be wired?
No. Motion detectors, desk sensors and the People Counter run on solar cells or batteries and are glued or screwed in place. Only the Presence Count and the receivers need power, usually via PoE.
Do I need a cloud for this?
No. The gateway works locally in the building and passes the data to your own systems. There is no fee per sensor.
Shall we plan your floor space?
Send us the floor plan, the room types and your cleaning or CAFM system. You will receive a proposal for sensors, receivers and gateways, a list with order numbers and a quote.
