EnOcean® Secure now on the VL-700 BASE

The ECS update decrypts EnOcean telegrams directly in the control cabinet – for up to 500 sensors, without a cloud and without licence fees.

DEUTA Controls GmbH is adding EnOcean® Secure to its EnOcean gateway VL-700 BASE. With the new EnOcean Control System (ECS), the gateway receives encrypted telegrams according to the EnOcean Security Specification and decrypts them itself: AES-128 protects the content, a rolling code prevents recorded telegrams from being replayed, and a CMAC makes tampered telegrams detectable.

Until now, EnOcean readings travelled in plaintext; anyone who set up a receiver within radio range could read them. With EnOcean® Secure, the telegram stays encrypted until it arrives at the VL-700 BASE. From there, the values go straight to the building automation – via BACnet, Modbus TCP, MQTT, OPC UA or KNX. There is no decryption in a data centre and no round trip back.

Up to 500 Secure sensors can be operated per VL-700 BASE, also mixed with unencrypted devices. A sensor’s key is stored once in the ECS; as before, there is no fee per sensor. EnOcean® Secure is available now for new devices. Our own sensors with Secure are in preparation.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas and is considered a relevant health risk, particularly in enclosed and underground work areas. European regulations, including EU Directive 2013/59/Euratom (Basic Safety Standards), require employers to assess and control radon exposure in workplaces with potentially elevated concentrations.
