Room utilization
Track how many people are in a room or area throughout the day.
Here's how the measurement works
From the sensor to your systemThe goal is to determine how many people are in a room throughout the day. This may be required by a health and safety regulation that specifies a maximum number of people per room. Similarly, the usage and booking patterns of existing meeting rooms can be analyzed using current and historical data.
One possible outcome is that several small rooms may better meet a team’s needs than one large conference room. Instead of adding more space, the existing space can be used more effectively by repurposing it.
An EnoSense® People Counter door sensor is mounted above the door on the hallway side—after cleaning the surface of the door frame—using the pre-installed double-sided adhesive pad.
The sensor detects people passing beneath it at a typical distance of about 1.00 m and, immediately upon detection, sends an EnOcean message with a count value ranging from 0 to 255. The value cycles continuously: in the positive direction, 254, 255, 0, 1, 2; in the negative direction, 1, 0, 255, 254, 253. The actual number of people is determined by the cloud-based application. This is why rooms with multiple doors—and thus multiple counters—can also be equipped.
An EnoDisc® within range captures the data and forwards it via Ethernet to the VL-700 BASE, which then transmits the data in JSON format to the MQTT broker of your choice.
Arguments in favor of this
- Simple installation of the sensors
- Short installation and commissioning times
- Short amortization period for your investment
- Can be adapted to virtually any cloud application
- Internationally available solution
Accuracy and How to Ensure It
The accuracy of the EnoSense® People Counter typically ranges between 80 and 95 percent. Various factors play a role here; please feel free to contact us for more information.
When it’s important to reliably detect an empty room—for example, to trigger an approval in the booking system—it’s also recommended to install a motion detector such as the EnoSense® PIR Ceiling in the room. If the detector does not detect any motion over a specified period—such as 20 minutes—reset the counter to zero, regardless of the current count. This allows you to periodically correct any potentially inaccurate counts. More in our guide People counting without a camera.
